About the Place
In the early 19th century, there was a sugar refinery in Belém linked to a small local shop. In 1834, male religious orders were abolished in Portugal. In an attempt to survive, a Jerónimos Monastery monk began selling sweet pastries in the shop, which were soon dubbed Pastéis de Belém. Production began in premises attached to the refinery in 1837. This ancient recipe has been passed down exclusively to the master pastry chefs who still make the pastries by hand in the ‘Oficina do Segredo’ [Secret Room], and it remains unchanged to this day.
