About the Place
Located on the ground floor of a 1950s residential building, this old warehouse with no windows or exterior views, lit only by four square skylights, gave way to an apartment for a couple. The proposal sought the clearest possible reading of the existing structure while keeping the interior volume unchanged. The careless grey garage became a white luminous space. Loose elements are carefully put into the space, organizing the different uses. The kitchen bench, made of white marble, defines the kitchen area, whereas the coloured curtains separate different living areas. The sum of the pieces spread throughout the space carries a flexible identity, sign of a new “domesticity” that doesn’t deny the industrial origins of the space it occupies. In 2017, this was one of the buildings that withstood damage after a landslide in the back of Rua Damasceno Monteiro.
