Alfeite Arsenal

  • Original Authors:
  • Arsenal do Alfeite ,
  • S.A.
  • (1939)

The Alfeite Arsenal got its name from an adjacent farm. The property comprehends 36 hectares that rest on an embankment platform, facing the Sea of Straw. The building was financed by the First World War indemnities, its construction started in 1928 and was inaugurated in 1939. Integrated in the structure of the Lisbon Naval Base, the Arsenal provides construction and maintenance services to the Portuguese Navy. It also repairs and supports other NATO and commercial ships using advanced technologies in the areas of electronics, optronics, armament, mechanics and electrical engineering. The compound has a 138-meter-long dry dock, a floating dock, three inclined planes, a berth, two mooring bridges, and 80,000 square meters of buildings. In 2009 the shipyard was transformed into a company with public capital, but the Portuguese Navy remains its primary customer.
