About the Place
The former Convent of the Holy Trinity, founded in 1294, was destroyed by fire in 1704 and again in 1756, and was further damaged by the 1755 earthquake. Following the dissolution of the religious orders, it was dismantled in 1834 and converted into the Trindade Brewery. It introduced the habit of drinking beer to the city, evoking the medieval Germanic practice of brewing beer in convents. The tile panels by Luís Ferreira, from the Viúva Lamego Ceramics Factory, date from 1863. Reflecting the owner’s somewhat eccentric taste, they feature an abundance of Masonic symbols. Maria Keil decorated the walls with panels inspired by Portuguese cobblestones. The site has been recognised as City Cultural Heritage since 1986 and as having significant historical and cultural value since 1997. It has also been designated a Shop with History since 2026.
