This faculty is part of the extension of the University of Lisbon on the Cidade Universitária campus in the late 1980s/early 1990s. Fronting onto the Alameda das Universidades, this building asserts itself through its horizontality and its austere exterior with its rhythmic rows of windows. It was conceived so as to allow for future extensions and the building’s division into the two sectors it now covers was also planned. The plan links two bodies built around cloister-like courtyards, with students using the lateral walkway arcades as meeting points. There are two entrances, whereby the one in the southern façade facing Alameda da Universidade is currently used. Despite its integration into the surroundings, this faculty building stands out from the other buildings around it, and was awarded the Valmor Prize and the Municipal Prize for Architecture in 1991.
