About the Place
Although rehabilitation is usually associated with older buildings, there is an increasing number of interventions in more recent buildings and neighbourhoods. That is the case of this flat in the Telheiras neighbourhood. On the top floor of a building from the 1980s, the existing three-bedroom typology is transformed into a two-bedroom one, allowing for a larger living room. Adaptation to the structure of the building, which clearly defines three distinct zones – entrance, private area, and social area – was the starting point for the development of the project. The approach, which seeks rationality, is constantly contradicted in the transitions between the different spaces, where the design of the carpentry and the manipulation of light, scale, and materials play a key role.
