- (1965)
The Marine Planetarium, originally named Calouste Gulbenkian, was conceived by Eugénio Conceição Silva, a Portuguese naval officer with a passion for astronomy and astronomical observation, and designed by the architect Frederico George. It was inaugurated in 1965. The building is a formalisation of a large reinforced concrete dome over a horizontal volume that forms the square between the Jerónimos Monastery and the Navy Museum. With a dome 23.5 metres in diameter and a capacity of 312 seats, it is a modern scientific and cultural facility whose main mission is to show the general public the starry sky unaltered by man. A sky that we have lost sight of since electricity took over urban life.
