Ribeira das Naus

  • Interventions:
  • Proap
  • (2014 reabilitação)

This is a mythical space for Portuguese and local identities as it is the site of the shipyard where many of the Portuguese discoveries’ vessels were built. The myth articulates the certainty of the ships built there with the possibility that these were the protagonists of the movement that discovered global routes and was the first globalization phenomenon promoted by Portugal. The discovery and integration of fossil elements — which were partially buried there — was determining for the character of the area, playing a fundamental part in the process of recreating Ribeira das Naus. This intervention, carried out within the framework of the riverine requalification plan, included the redesign of the waterfront avenue, with the objective of rescuing this site from the memory of degradation it laid in for a long time. As a qualified public space, it gives back to the citizens an important stretch of Lisbon’s history and riverfront, connecting two of the city’s most important urban landmarks: Cais do Sodré and Terreiro do Paço.
