Amoreiras Shopping – Auchan Hypermarket

  • Original Authors:
  • Tomás Taveira
  • (1985)

The Amoreiras Shopping Centre is one of Lisbon’s most iconic 1980s post-modern retail spaces. The hypermarket has remained in the same location since its opening, first as Pão-de-Açúcar and now as Auchan, adapting a modern, industrial food retail operation to a unique architectural structure. With over 4,500 customers a day, around 200 workers, and a constant flow of goods, the hypermarket operates almost non-stop throughout the year. Its fresh produce and local offerings are particularly notable, including a bakery, deli, butcher’s, fishmonger’s, cheese shop and charcuterie. The tour will reveal the inner workings of the store, including the back-of-house and preparation areas.
