Cecílio de Sousa Studio

  • Interventions:
  • Manuel Aires Mateus ,
  • Francisco Aires Mateus
  • (2017 reabilitação)

This building, which houses the studio of the architect Manuel Aires Mateus, retrains many urban bourgeois features of the late 18th and 19th centuries.
The remodelling/restoration project creates an exhibition space in addition to the private work space, reflecting the community/sharing-based approach to the design. The remodel was an operation that highlights the existing elements, recovers others and establishes new readings of the reality. Paintings, tiles and the main spatial structures were considered permanent elements. The conversion project proceeded from these, with the aim of enhancing them. Despite their separateness in terms of time, the new elements adapt to the building’s history, integrating themselves into a logic that the end product is the harmonious sum of all periods in the life of a building.
