Our Lady of the Conception Parish Church

In contrast to more traditional church buildings, this church in Olivais Sul does not sit on a privileged site in the modern context of its surroundings. The large volume slotted into the sloping site is reminiscent of an industrial building in terms of scale and its use of exposed concrete. Its presence is introverted. On the exterior, the discreet, unadorned entrance is marked only by a cross; and in the interior, the spaces live from the light, even though they have no direct relationship with the street outside. At the entrance, a wide staircase leads to the upper level which features the sacred space itself where the masses are held, at the centre of which is the altar. This floor also features various modules that define the circulation spaces and spaces for contemplation. The latter include the two courtyards which serve to illuminate the interior space, with the aid of skylights over the aisles in the church space and the glass brick wall that filters light into the interior.
