Aligned with Baixa Pombalina’s design pattern, the current church results from a reconstruction project of the old Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Misericórdia de Lisboa – the headquarters of the country’s first “Misericórdia”, a Portuguese charity – implemented after the 1755 earthquake. The building combines elements taken from different churches, as well as some parts of the old church that existed on that same site, as is the case of the facade, which, alongside Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and Torre de Belém, is one of the best Manueline structures that survived the earthquake. The Pombaline interior shows only one aisle, the Santíssimo Sacramento Chapel of the former Igreja da Misericórdia. In 2014, Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa requested its recovery. It underwent a discreet intervention, and a restoration work that remarkably amplifies the reading of the original church and its constituent elements. It was considered a National Monument in 1910.
