Castelo School

- (1972)
The first design under his own name by one of the major figures of the second generation of Portuguese modernism is to be found on a small plot in the urban grid of the Castelo area; up until 1952, the year this design project was begun, this space was a void backyard space. The organic design is in line with post-war architectural principles and interpretation of the new pedagogic theories of the Modern School Movement, which stressed the importance of the environment in education through emotional ties between the home and place of education. The luminous interior and strong relationship with the exterior were developed around two courtyards, offering safety and privacy at the same time as advancing independence.
