One of the greatest public facilities with modern design of its time, it still functions today, centred on the core spaces of the 1950s project, although it has undergone some changes over time. Designed to house the Lisbon Industrial Fair, the building consists of two large exhibition halls, galleries and an open-air exhibition area. A unique work in the context of Portuguese architecture in terms of the technology used and its programme, it took advantage of the technical possibilities and materials available at the time to create an inventive solution that made it possible to span a distance of 40 metres without the need for intermediate supports. In Portugal, this building represented a breakthrough in terms of the means used, but also in terms of the technical possibilities it opened up, regardless of symbolic or customary imperatives.
