The regular profile of the Pombaline buildings at the Rua do Arsenal conceals the hill where the convent of São Francisco was once installed. The transposition from this upper level is available through the Calçada do Ferragial, or to the east by the Rua da Conceição. The Cartulário Pombalino, apparently uniform, always gains new variants as it moves away from the downtown’s orthogonal grid. Some buildings establish a connection between the hill and the river, as the higher floors lead to small alleys or private patios. The edifice at the Rua do Arsenal stands as a clear example of how the city adapts to its topography. Also worthy of note, the telluric action of excavating the rock substrate to gain extra space, as we seen in the ground floor.
