This extension design by French/Portuguese teams, with the participation of the school community, features a bioclimatic architecture centred on comfort for the user and respect for the environment thanks to the use of ecological and local materials, such as cork and lioz stone. One important characteristic is the natural cross-ventilation, as well as the vertical strips of wood on the more exposed facades, thus allowing for circulation of the air and control of exposure to the sun in the interior spaces. Integration into the surroundings is another of the main concerns: classrooms open onto the playgrounds, thus ensuring total permeability between the interior and exterior and nourishing a “feeling of candour and freedom,” to use the words of the designers.
