Marvila Municipal Library
- Original Authors:
- Raul Hestnes Ferreira
- (2016)
This project erects a building from scratch and renovates the pre-existing complex of Quinta and Palácio das Fontes that belonged to the Duke of Palmela. The library is in an area undergoing profound transformation of its original rural and industrial character, now replaced by lots for public collective housing. It is a cluster for reading, arts, training, and learning, where cultural programming is conceived as a means to construct a community with those who live in the surrounding neighbourhoods. With more than 2600 m2, it is the largest municipal library in Lisbon, containing an auditorium, reading rooms and children’s rooms. The central space with multiple heights shows how important is for Hestnes Ferreira to have geometry and materiality defining shape and proportions, as he recalls the influence of Louis Kahn’s architecture, with whom he worked in the USA.
