An urban palace with a trapezoidal plan, with the main façade facing Largo de São Sebastião da Pedreira and walls up to the intersection with Rua Marquês de Fronteira, the building defined the city limits in the 18th century. In 1858, José Maria Euqénio de Almeida bought a ruined palace built in 1730 by Fernando de Larre and commissioned the French architect Jean Colson to rebuild it. In 1857 he bought the Quinta da Provedoura, which he transformed into the Parque de Santa Gertrudes, a private garden with stables. One of the most important examples of late neoclassicism in 19th-century Portuguese domestic architecture, the interior preserves a series of rooms characterised by a collection of stuccoed ceilings and walls. In 2023, the palace was handed over to the Ombudsman’s Office for an indefinite period.
