Lisbon’s Riverside
by João Gomes da Silva and Inês Norton
The walk takes in The Walls of Lisbon Riverside, as described by Vieira da Silva (CML, 1st ed.1900). Today, 125 years after the illustrious Olissipógrafo's description, we contemplate the contemporary transformation that has taken place in recent decades in this part of the city. Following an urban renewal operation on Lisbon's waterfront, involving the Government of the Republic, the Port of Lisbon Administration, and the Municipality, a series of tenders and projects have transformed the experience of this stretch of the Tagus estuary. In what sequence were these urban projects developed, how are they articulated, and who were their authors? How has the appropriation and use of spaces changed? What are Lisbon and its port today, two juxtaposed cities?
